State Senator Hiram Monserrate, accused of beating up his
girlfriend and allegedly slashing her with a broken piece of glass in a fight in his apartment on December 19th during a fit of jealousy, was indicted on March 23rd on three counts of felony assault and three counts of misdemeanor assaults.
His girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, needed twenty stitches just above one of her eyes.
Though she first told hospital officials that Senator
Monserrate hit her; Ms. Giraldo later said that it was an accident.
Criminal Attorneys for Senator Monserrat want the video
tossed, saying that prosecutors “spliced” the hours-long surveillance tape footage into a six and a half minute tape, and can thus be very misleading. A demand has been filed in Court by Criminal Lawyers for the Senator to obtain the entire unedited tape.
